The αυλή was always the market

Before Cyprus had supermarkets, it had yards. The αυλή was where the lemon tree grew, where the hens lived, where herbs dried in the shade, and where a neighbour would call κοπιάστε — come, take some. Surplus did not need a distribution chain. It crossed a fence.

That exchange never disappeared; it just became invisible. The tree still overproduces in February. The garden still ripens all at once in July. What was lost was not the food or the goodwill — it was the simple way of knowing which yard had extra, and who nearby wanted it.

What “from yard to yard” means

Η αγορά από αυλή σε αυλή is the shortest honest description of what happens on Local Finds. Something is grown, raised or made in one yard, kitchen or workshop, and it travels directly to another. Nothing passes through a warehouse, a reseller or an algorithm deciding who deserves attention.

It is our answer to “farm to table”, scaled to how Cyprus actually works. Most of what neighbours have to offer does not come from a farm. It comes from two lemon trees, a small flock, a busy kitchen, a potter’s bench. The yard, not the farm, is the honest unit of this island’s abundance.

What we promise

  • No middlemen. Local Finds never holds your money, takes a commission or stands between buyer and seller. Payment happens at the handover, between the two of you.
  • Free, with no paid rankings. A listing from a pensioner with one fig tree competes equally with everyone else. Attention cannot be bought.
  • Private by design. Public listings show an approximate area only. Contact details and the meeting point are shared after a request is accepted.
  • Real people, real batches. Listings describe what actually exists this week — quantity, condition, timing — not a catalogue of promises.
  • Less waste. A glut that finds a neighbour is food; a glut that finds no one is compost. The market from yard to yard exists to close that gap.

What we refuse to become

Most marketplaces drift toward the same destination: commissions, promoted listings, resellers, and pressure on sellers to behave like small corporations. We are choosing a different destination on purpose.

Local Finds will not rank listings for money, will not insert itself into payments, and will not optimise for the volume of transactions over the quality of exchanges. If a feature makes the platform richer but the handover worse, it does not ship.
